“Postcards From an Artist”: It Begins!

Postcards from an artist

Today it begins! I’m in New York right now; later this week, Rome. After that, Germany, Switzerland and France. In all, close to 2 months, 4 countries and a world of experiences I can’t wait to embrace!

Here’s the thing. I didn’t want this to be one of those “Oh – Karen’s off doing her thing. How nice.” things.  I wanted to be more inclusive than that. This experience is the result of a series of choices, decisions and life-changing events in my life that began years ago. I wanted this trip to account for all of them. But even more; count towards maybe giving ALL of us the juice we need to create a life more amazing than we ever dreamed possible. Maybe I’m a dreamer (Duh!)… but I know I’m not the only one. 😉

I just made this video this morning, introducing the whole idea. It’s super casual… I did it done on my iPhone, before heading out for the day.

Here’s what I’m planning. Certainly, I’ll be sharing my adventures through photographs, writing and video… but more, I invite everyone to join into a “Live a Life You Love” challenge. I’m not making that last bit a formal thing, it’s just an invitation to dream. To say “YES” to what you love and secretly desire instead of barfing up a list of all the reasons why you can’t, why it doesn’t make sense, why “IT” can never happen… whatever “It” is for you.

I’ll share ideas and goings-on each today.

For instance, here’s a idea: TODAY’S CHALLENGE: BEGIN. That’s it. Just begin. For instance:

What idea, thought or dream have you had that you’ve procrastinated, put off or just plain said “no” to? What one simple action could you take today that’s in alignment with it? It could be the tiniest thing, it doesn’t matter. What DOES matter is that YOU know it’s a step. The change happens in your mind first. The action makes it real.

I know how conditioned we all are to think “Oh – that’s great for her/him… she/he is (fill in the blank with whatever reason why you think he/she can have “It”, but you can’t) Believe me, I get it. Along the way, I’ll share why this notion hits home for me, why I feel it’s imperative to STOP SAYING NO  to our dreams and some of the ways I’ve found to invite my inner YES to play… successfully. It’s taken me a lifetime. Maybe through this, you’ll have some awesome “Aha!” that cuts down the (life)time for you.

Or maybe you’re already living the life you dreamed of – and want to root us on! I’d love that so hard.

Maybe you think this is all BS. Hey, that’s OK too. You can just look at the photos. They’ll be plenty of ’em!

A Little Light Reading To Get You In The Mood

I’ve been writing alot lately… and did a cool interview.
All of it weaves back to finding your voice, living your life as an art and photography. Yes, gear too… it’s all connected!

If you haven’t already seen them, I hope you enjoy! (click on any of the images below to go to the articles)

  1. This article for Landscape Photography Magazine is called “The Second Most Important Skill You Need As A Photographer.” What is it? Writing. You’ll see why it’s a can’t-live-without! The article is a purchase (I bought it, it didn’t hurt a bit!)… but not that much and there are LOADS of pictures!

2. Here’s an interview I did with Tiffany Briley of Landscape Photography Magazine. We talked about both artistic and photography stuff. I also tell “that story”… about how a childhood vision I had at about 8 or 9 years of age shaped my entire life. The best part: This one’s free!

Fujilove e-Magazine is brand new and all awesome! I wrote a fun article for the premiere issue, which I called “Love, Falling Down and Fujifilm“. HeeHee. Fujilove Magazine included a bunch of other awesome photographers as well… and is about the best deal out there at $3.95/month!

This piece for fStop Lounge seemed timely, since I’m about to embark on whole BUNCH of travel: “My 5 Secretly Favorite Things About Travel“. Thematic! (and free) 😀

  1. I am right there with you Karen seeing the rest of Europe through your vision. You are a super big influence on me. I recently switched to Fuji film. Love it, the potability but mostly the images really help express my style.
My big dream is photograpghing rural people and finding their unique story. I am posting my first blog post on one of the last men who logs with his horses in the woods in the Ardennes area of Belgium. I will put your hashtag on some of the images.
Have a treat trip and thanks for bringing me along.

    1. Gigi!! LOVE that you have a trusty Fuji now…and that it helps you express your style. I knew it would!

And…your first blog post?? SO EXCITING!! And what an incredible story you’ve got to tell. Wow!

This is quite a journey we’re all on…I’m so glad I’ve got such good company. 🙂

  2. I’m so looking forward to enjoying this trip through your travels. Who wouldn’t love to do what you’re doing? Thank you for including us – and as always, just being so real that we feel like you’re sending postcards among great friends.
Working on the yes breakthrough that you describe. The doubts about the “quality and ability” of my own “voice” are what hold me back. Thank you for being a wonderful mentor to so many – including me.

    1. Oh Leslie, I so hear you. Finding our voices is a lifetime project…and a moving target, since it evolves as we do.

For the record, I hear and love your beautiful voice loud and clear!

  3. Loved your first video your love of adventure and what you do shine through. Your mind does not see in a straight line so I am excited to see where you take us on your travels.

    1. Thank you so much Jane! To say my mind doesn’t see in a straight line is SUCH an understatement! I may have finally found a way to channel that… and I’m excited to see where it all takes me (and us) too!

  4. That’s a mighty large post card! 😉
Love this – will be sharing as well along the journey!
My Begin: Start Outlining the How Do You See Mentorship #2 program!

    1. Hahahhaha Lauri! Yes, a BIG postcard… I’m still in the states though, so postage isn’t that bad. (snort!) THANK YOU for sharing it!!

LOVE your Begin!!! Big vision… YESSSSS!!!
