Desert Heat & One Hot Sale

Valley of Fire

Deserts in general are mystical to me. Otherworldly. Paradoxical. And crazy photogenic! I don’t think I’d choose to live in a desert world… but holy wow, I am just completely awed into silence (riiiiight??) when I step into one so magestic and magical as Valley of Fire, just outside of Las Vegas.

I visited there most recently when I went to Photoshop World last month. I went with my brother-from-another-mother Barry Blanchard, his new wife Traci and friends. Barry is like the unofficial ambassador of VOF. He loves it really, really hard – and knows better than almost anyone. Seeing it first through his eyes when he introduced me to the place a few years ago taught mine to see things differently there. I LOVE when that happens!  It changed my perspective completely. And took my breath away.

Valley of Fire is unique. It’s alot like the other, more popular desert-y spots in Utah and Arizona… but MUCH less visited. You really have to make friends with the place. Love it. Quietly applaud it, so that – just like Tinkerbell – it comes to life before your eyes. Those same eyes that take a little patience and tuning to see it all properly. Mind you, I’m still working on mine. But I think I had a little breatkthrough this time:

Pure intent. Like a beacon in the night. Valley of Fire, Nevada at blue hour.

Oh yeah. Crazy love that place!
Applauds.
Valley of Fire blushes and turns a little redder.
Grin.

The 5DayDeal Starts TODAY!

NEWSFLASH: The photography bundle that is (in my humble opinion) the BEST deal out there starts TODAY at 12 noon PT!

It’s an interesting concept: A sale that lasts for 5 days only, offering an insane discount on photography tools and stuff.

So here’s my nutty thinking: y’know how there are these two photo contests coming up on Viewbug – where the grand prize is yet another couple of Fuji Cameras (I’m judging one, Ken Kaminesky is judging the other)? Well, maybe… just maybe… this is your chance to get some new chops, pick up some new ideas that’ll help you slam dunk your entry into new realms of beauty and creativity?

I love it when things ties together. 😀

In any case, if you use this link (or click on the image below)… you can check it all out for yourself after it goes live at 12pm PT today. And yes, I get the credit if you use the link here. Just being open about that. TOTALLY your choice how you do it though… I’ll love ya no matter what! Mostly, I want you to get the goods while they’re available.. from today through September 15.

Here’s a sneak peak:

And with that, I’ll bid you adieu!

I’m off to the airport to pick up one awesome friend: Tanya Wallis, on her first-ever trip to the U.S.!! More on THAT story soon… hint: you might need a hanky!

Cheers to Zabriskie!

Winding Down with Zabriskie Point

It’s been busy, brain-bendy and learning curvy lately and I still have more to do! It is, after all, a long and thrill-packed road we’re navigating. But here, it’s late afternoon on a Friday and I’m drifting toward a weekend state of mind.

I thought a new image from a peaceful sunrise morning at Zabriskie Point in Death Valley, California fit the mood perfectly. The air was chilly, but the colors were warm. The quiet: soothing to the bone. Though not typically a sunrise person… I actually got up at 3am to make the hour and half drive to be at this spot in time for the glorious rise of the sun. It was worth it.

It brought forth questions about how to tell a unique story of a monumental spot visited by many. Well, all I know how to do is shoot with my heart. With my soul. With all the light and thoughts and vision that moments such as this ignite in me. I close my eyes and let the grandness of it all fill me up. I don’t chase it. That never works. You have to use soft eyes. Sink in, let the moment wrap its arms around you until you nearly weep. Only then can you capture what you see… from what you feel.

So I say, go ahead; put on some music you love, raise a glass of your favorite refreshment… and let’s toast to our amazing journey on this incredible spinning little orb we call home.

Then it dawned on me... and I got the point. Sorry. Had to go there. Grin.

The Stone Cabins

The Lesser Known Southwest

My friend Barry Blanchard introduced me to The Valley of Fire… and awesome place in the Nevada desert, about 45 minutes outside of Las Vegas. It’s got much of the cool factor of Southwest style ruins and petroglyphs – but without all the crowds you can get in Utah and Arizona. I love that!

I’ve taken some of my fave photos there, like this one, and of course this one.

Then there are The Cabins:

One Night in Death Valley

My Recent Adventure

I just returned from an awesome flying adventure with the equally awesome Jessica Ambats. Naturally, it was a blast. But also a revelation! I’m going to do a major post about the trip… but wanted to share this simple image from an evening just a few nights ago in Death Valley. I loved the color block effect and the crisp lines of the moon that night.

Valley of Fire

Coming home from our Southwest photo vacation, we drove through Valley of Fire in Nevada. Our re-planned trip (the one we made up after the national parks closed, erasing our original Plan A) had us staying over night at VOF so we could do sunrise/sunset there. But when the parks opened in time to visit Bryce National Park, well… there was no discussion. That’s where we went for 2 nights.

And still.. we managed to hit a Valley of Fire sunset as we headed back to Las Vegas to return our RV. It was absolutely splendid! A girl does love to have her cake and eat it too. 😉
