Vic Gundotra & Google+: My Story

Get Ready For My Windiest Post Ever!

Amanda Blain started it. I blame her. She wrote this blog post, as well as posting on Google+. She made her point… then said “tell us your story.” Well, I’ve got a good one!

This all started because Google Senior Vice President of Social Vic Gundotra announced his departure from Google last week. This is huge. Vic and his team created Google+ – a platform that has forever changed my life.  If you’re wondering who Vic Gundotra is, I’m re-posting this episode of The Chat I did with him awhile back. It’s my first re-run (!), but in honor of him and the lives he’s transformed through his work, I felt it was only fitting.

The Chat with Karen Hutton: Vic Gundotra

Chatting with Vic at Google HQ

In this week’s episode of The Chat, I visit with Vic Gundotra; Senior Vice President of Social at Google. He and his team are also the creators of Google+… the social network that literally changed everything for me. I was so excited to sit down with him – the only agony was trimming the huge herd of questions I had!

Coming Monday: The Chat with Vic Gundotra!

Sneak Peak!

Here’s a sneak peak at what’s coming this Monday… when my guest will be Vic Gundotra!
Vic is the Senior Vice President of Social at Google. He and his team are the innovators behind Google+, which sees 1.5 billion photos uploaded every week as of this show – and growing.

Vic graciously agreed to sit down with me and Chat with me about whatever I wanted to ask… he made no rules, nothing was off-limits. I was most interested in some things social… but all things inspiration. Turns out, what inspires him largely the role technology needs to play in bringing us closer to each other – and our own humanity.

In this clip, he talks about where he sees Social going… and the role of photography within that. He says “I think we’re just getting started”. I think he may be right!

THE CHAT with Karen Hutton: Laurie Rubin

In keeping with our “awesome photographer” roll of late, I was SUPER stoked to Chat with Laurie Rubin!

She’s a Googler, award-winning wildlife and nature photographer and I’m delighted that she’s also my friend.
When it comes to animals and photography – you have never seen someone drop into “the zone” faster than Laurie when she’s got a critter in her photographic crosshairs. It’s an amazing transformation to behold! She’s so understated about her fabulous work… but I think you’ll agree with me that it’s pretty much jaw-dropping.

Laurie’s made a career and life out of photography… both with camera in-hand and as part of the NIK Software team that joined Google. There, she is part of a team on the cutting edge of some of the most exciting developments in photography today. Even still, home and heart is out in nature with her beloved animals. It’s all part of the inspired world of Laurie Rubin… who today, shares her photography, advice for young’ns just starting out, and the great humor and passion that makes her photo-awesome!

Sunset Day

Sunsets always make me think of a simple thing my mother used to say ALOT: “My cup runneth over.” She was blessed in life and she knew it. Perhaps you have to live through enough in life to really appreciate the depth of that sentiment. Apparently I’ve crossed that invisible line, because every day now, I truly do feel like my cup runneth right the heck over!

It seems sunsets resonate with a deeply sublime place in lots of other people too, because The Weather Channel is actually dedicating September 19th as “Sunset Day”! More about that in a sec (and the Hangout On Air I that went with it)… but first, just breathe with me:

The Chat with Karen Hutton: Daria Musk, Part 2

It’s here! It’s here! A week goes by SO fast! And now, seemingly in the blink of an eye; Part 2 of my Chat with Daria Musk.
We pick up talking about choices… and the enormous power of our thoughts in creating our reality.

She also sings! Two songs, actually. The first one is by my request. It’s one she sang a little bit of one night during a hangout when we were discussing this show… and I asked to her share it with you. It’s just beautiful and so elegantly, eloquently Daria.

The Chat with Karen Hutton: Daria Musk, Part 1

Well, the moment has arrived! Welcome to the premiere episode of The Chat! WooHOOO!
Everybody was EPIC with the guesses they made about WHO the first guest would BE. THANK YOU!! And now…

For this auspicious debut, I chose a 2-part episode with a super star on the rise… who has a big vision about life, giving and the power of a dream.

Singer/songwriter/musician Daria Musk became a friend and inspiration in the course of the first two years on social netowrk Google+. We hit it off immediately and discovered that we share a similar outlook on life, philosophy and approach to our art. She’s a thinker, that one. And she’s so marvelous at putting it all into words – and music – that I wanted hers to kickoff the entire series. If you haven’t met Daria; you’re in for a treat! If you already know/follow/admire Daria: you’re in for a treat!
Two-fers are G+nius!

Click here to see Part 2. We wrap our chat – and move on to some singin’!

G+ Women In Photography Series: featuring Karen Hutton!

1st interview in a new Google+ series

My friend Laurie Rubin is a member of the esteemed Google+ Photos Team. She’s also a fabulous wildlife photographer; check out her work here. As a Googler, she’s created a interview series, highlighting women photographers… and she invited me to be her first featured guest! It’s also an interview where I publicly mention for the first time the project I’ve been working on for months… which is kind of a rush and a little scary! But it was a fun visit with Laurie, talking about That Thing I love so much: Photography.

Photography is a great leveler. And still…

One of the things I love about photography is that it’s a great leveling ground. Men, women, people of different cultures and upbringing – can all participate. Yes, gear factors in to a degree… but PERSPECTIVE is king/queen over here. And according to your gender, culture, upbringing, age, preferences, world view… your work will be shaped. Laurie chose to focus on the women’s perspective and I think it will be fascinating!

I’ve observed differences in how the women photographers I know think from men… but then, I note how differently photographer friends on the other side of world approach their images too, simply based upon who and where they are in the world. How DO women think and approach this art form? I really only know this from my own eyes… and I’m really interesting and excited to see what Laurie discovers as she talks to other women from all forms of photography. DO we share a similar experience? What DOES guide their perspectives? What do they think about when they shoot? What do they gravitate toward? All will be revealed in time… and I can’t wait to share the journey!!

SO honored to be the first.

GO Laurie Rubin!!

Virtual Photo Walks: Google+ San Francisco with Trey Ratcliff & Thomas Hawk

On May 14, 2013… I joined up with Virtual Photo Walks  (click link to see the VPW event posting on G+) to broadcast the massive Google+ San Francisco Photo Walk with Trey Ratcliff and Thomas Hawk. (click the link to view Trey’s posted event on G+.) It was all part of kicking off Google I/O 2013, starting the very next day – and featuring he Google Glass Project. It was a freakin’ awesome experience!! I loved how we combined forces and made the live streaming broadcast (which was also recorded, as you see below) even bigger and more awesome! As some of you may remember, Virtual Photo Walks was featured on NBC Nightly News, which I talked about in an previous post.
This is the sweetly edited version of the G+ Photo Walk in San Francisco:
