Scouting Locations in France is FUN!

I’ll admit it: scouting locations for my “Finding Your Artistic Voice” retreat in France is FUN!!

The South of France is truly a glorious place to explore photographic artistry, find your voice (in art AND in life), deepen your connection to your health and most of all: your most expressive, artistic YOU. Everything here supports that and I couldn’t wait to come back for the Fall installment of this workshop. New people, new stories, new images, new places!

(Click here to see the recap of the FIRST “Find Your Artist’s Voice” retreat/workshop!)

Overlooking Cannes

One really nice spot is up on a hill by a big cathedral. It overlooks Cannes Harbor in one of those “Look ma, a POSTCARD!” moments. I thought it was a fine place to kick off this chapter of “Postcards From France”. Of course, the sun was so bright I could hardly keep my eyes open as I made this first vid of the series for this trip.

NOTE: all of these videos are low res, since the internet here isn’t robust enough to upload anything wooftier. But you’ll get the idea…

Grasse!

I just love Grasse. It’s SO much fun to photograph! I had heard there was scaffolding set up in town though, so wanted to make sure our cinematic view wasn’t spoiled like rotten cheese. Plus, I wanted to test out the bus system from Cannes (read that as meaning: make sure I knew where it picked up, dropped off and didn’t smell bad.).

So Tanya Wallis and I leapt on the #600 bus that picked us up right in front of our hotel and headed up the hill.

We made a video too. Grin.

Verdict on Grasse: no scaffolds, bus smelled great and the place still ROCKS!

The Boat to Île Sainte Marguerite

Last May when I was here, I didn’t have time to take the 15 minute ferry ride to Île Sainte Marguerite. It’s a marvelous excursion and easy peasy to do. I’ve heard several people talk about it – so this time, I wondered if it would be a good place to take the group and decided to find out.

The island is home to Fort Royal, which was known to be inhabited in Roman times. It’s also where the real life “Man in the Iron Mask” was held for 30+ years in the 17th century. His cell is alot cleaner now than it was then… but you can go inside and imagine spending over 3 decades in a stone cell with a mask on your face. Suffice it to say I was happy to be outside again!

Here’s the thing:  I’m not a huge fan of boats. But to see the island, you gotta float on the boat. Ain’t no way around it. I decided making a new “Postcards” video was a great idea. Turns out, it definitely was – but ARGH! the audio on the video from my iPhone went all wonky, rendering it impossible to use.  I was going to toss the whole thing and had a very sad face.

Suddenly Tanya starts laughing in this funny out-of-context way (with a scary wicked gleam in her eye) and says “I know just the story I can tell with the bits that aren’t too bad!” She was guffawing so hard, I just had to let her create her (clearly) deranged vision, cause I couldn’t POSSIBLY have said anything TOOO “out there”! 😜

This is the result:

Verdict on Île Sainte Marguerite: We’re ON! This is an awesome place to visit! We literally had only an hour… and in that short time, unequivocally knew this would be one of the adventures the group HAD to have!

The Retreat Begins…

The moment arrived: scouting done, locations dialed in – it’s GO time!

More photos and videos to come! Time now to get back to living the experience… 😀

My New eBook!

My new eBook

Happy March 1!
My big news this week: a brand new eBook!  It’s called “10 Steps To Finding Your Voice.” You can get it here.

Here’s a screen shot of the cover and a couple of pages:

Finding Your Voice

I’m super excited about it! There really is no feeling quite delivering 1. a gorgeous custom print to a client… or 2. seeing your book in its finished form. Seriously. Delicious.

The book is based upon the 10-day series I did here on the blog recently. You may have seen it. But we added some extras and put it in a format you can easily gaze upon anytime, anywhere on any device… plus we added some extras goodies! And it’s just so purty in this form. 😀

This is the beginning of… what? I ask myself that. I ask because it feels like the tip of the iceberg. For me, finding your voice (which is SUCH an over-used term… I want a snappier way of saying it) is deep. It’s the beginning. It’s your North Star. It’s the place you always return to. It’s the light that guides you.

Taken that way.. it applies EVERYWHERE! The genius thing about it. If you can figure out where real voice lives inside of you… you’ll always be able to find you way, come up with your best expression, find your TRUTH in everything you do, say, create. It’s kind of a superpower that way. And it can free your soul.

It’s time for some souls to be set free, wouldn’t you say?

The Price:

$5.25. Wanna know why?

In numbers, 5 equates to Grace… 25 is Grace intensified.
If there was ever a topic that calls upon both of those… it’s finding your true voice, which is a glorious experience. After all these years of experiencing – and watching  – what happens when someones’ true voice shines through, I can honestly say it gives me goosebumps everytime. And it just feels like Grace. So that’s what I wanted the number to be. Affordable. Graceful.

Thank you

To Tanya Wallis for putting this puppy together! She of mighty art and design chops pulled it all together in record time. We used Canva.com, for those who are curious. It made the whole experience a piece of cake.

IMHO, finding your voice is ALSO about discovering the tools and technologies that help you get your creations out there in the most graceful way… and with ease. Now that we’ve discovered how simple it is to do eBooks in Canva… watch out! The roadblocks are gone… more are on their way!

GET THE EBOOK HERE.. or click “store” in the navigation at the top of this page!

And for the FULL experience…

On May 5-8, I’ll be holding The Artist’s Voice” Photo Retreat at Julia Child’s former home in Provence, France. What better place to sink into “Life as Art” than in the place that treasures life and art above all?

The eBook is the start of this conversation… the retreat is the full monty!  FIND OUT MORE BY CLICKING HERE.

Mak and Me

Makenna Johnston and I were on a special episode of MGAPXL with Ollie Dale of the The Arcanum last week. It was just us… talking about finding your photographic voice, what happens when you buy Julia Child’s house in Provence and answered a TON of great questions that everyone in the chat had for us… it was a so much fun!

Big thanks to Ollie for having us on board! Here ’tis… hope you enjoy!

Art From a Brain Cuisinart

Whew! I knew September would be a whirlwind, I just didn’t expect it feel like I’d been in a Cuisinart!

I don’t mean painful-Cuisinart, like sticking your hand into a blender for real (step awaaaay from that thought!).

I just mean it’s like that moment when new people, experiences, ideas and possibilities all come thundering in like a tsunami and get whipped together like some crazy awesome new smoothie recipe!

These tasty ingredients hail from all over the world… and will be appearing  soon in a blog post near you… Continue reading “Art From a Brain Cuisinart”

Creation Wars: “The Karen Hutton Special!” (I’m quoting here)

It’s always fun and, let’s be honest, a little weird to be the special guest on a show. I mean, 99% of the time I’m focused whatever I’m creating next. So when someone asks me to talk about what I know, I sometimes get a little self-conscious.

But it is fun to share – I think that’s a human thing. So I figured what the heck – and joined awesome hosts Tanya Wallis and Stu Davidson on  Creation Wars last week. And ya know what? It’s was fun and I didn’t feel too weird!

CW is the official online show of Trey Ratcliff’s The Arcanum, where they talk about all kinds of photography-related learning. With me, it was kind of topic-palooza; from the creative process, to critiques,  to what I always have in my camera bag.

I put the show notes just below the video, with what was said and where – just in case you want to skip around and hear only what interests you. 😉

The Arcanum: Margaret Gaines

This is the final installment in a 6-part series about my incredible experience as a Master in The Arcanum… and my stunningly inspiring Level 20 graduates.

A Little Background..

Those of you who follow this blog know that I’m one of the 6 original Inception Masters in the Arcanum.

Back when it all first started, I wrote a two-part blog post about what it all meant to me: The Arcanum, Magical Academy of Artistic Mastery.

I’m including these links on each of these highlight posts, since new folks are entering our little KHutt blog world over here every week. Wouldn’t want to leave any of you guys out!

Speaking Of New Stuff in 2015…

More New Stuff!

When last we spoke, I sneak peeked VIDA. Still super stoked about that; should have more to report soon! But wait, there’s more…

I’ve got a few more projects brewing in various stages… but one of them IS ready to share with y’all. (I love telling you guys first!)  This one’s just fun. Y’know, surprising. Delightful. It’s something I’ve been developing and using on my own photos. And I’m creating them with the awesome Tanya Wallis.

This “something” is in the textures/hues/overlays arena. Oh I know what you’re saying; jeez, there are TONS of those out there! Believe me, I know. Between Tanya and me, we’ve used quite a few of them. They’ve been cool, but more and more I’ve been craving something “extra” out of them. None were truly delivering the magic sauce just the way I wanted them to. It’s so subjective, I know. The thing was, I couldn’t quite put my finger on it, yet I could see what I was after in my mind’s eye; which is like having an itch you can’t quite scratch. Maddening! So I decided to see if I could create my own. Enter Textures, Round One.

I asked Tanya her opinion on my first pass. She basically suggested (so kindly, yet in her typical pull-no-punches Aussie sort of way) that I take them further. Y’know, go more KHutt-style with ’em. Long story short, it was like being given the keys to the candy store!  I went to town and painted it…well, a lot more colors than red! And y’know what? They started turning out some unexpected and pretty cool results.

Being a Master in The Arcanum

First, those of you who follow this blog know that I’m one of the 6 original Inception Masters in the Arcanum.

We began in April, 2014. 9 months later, I had 6 Level 20 graduates. It was such  an incredible journey of spirit, soul and creativity… for all of us.  Their stories just had to be shared. I’m doing it because they were the first bunch to take the leap of faith when the Arcanum was still a baby in beta. I think each one’s story is incredibly inspiring, each in their own unique way.

So far, I’ve shared the journeys of  Lauri NovakSandra CarlockDave Garber and Bob Young.

Today, I’d like to introduce you to…

Tanya Wallis.
