My 2015 “Gifts For Photographers & Other Humans” Lineup!

Buying Christmas gifts for the photographer in your life can be tricky. Even when that photographer is YOU!

Oh c’mon. Don’t pretend you don’t snag a few choice items for yourself along the way, thinking no one will notice.

I see you.
Honey, I AM you!

That’s why I decided to put this list together with both you AND them in mind. They’ve been great… and you’ve been AWESOME this year! You both deserve a li’l sumthin-sumthin. 😉

One of my parameters in making this list: no “photography poodles”. Meaning: no lens mugs, flower lens caps or macrame camera straps. No photography jewelry or kitchy t-shirts. Plenty of places to find those, this doesn’t have to be one of them.

Mostly, my idea here is to help get your brain going, get you going in some direction in your gift quest. Small stuff, big stuff… it’s all here. The rule: it all had to be useful. Proven. Some super practical, some just for fun. But all stuff I’d be delighted to get and put to work.

You can also have a gander at my Top 10 Travel Tips for a few things not listed here.

So here we go. I broke it all down into 5 groups: Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced, Professional and one I’m calling Lady Photographers and Other Humans Continue reading “My 2015 “Gifts For Photographers & Other Humans” Lineup!”

Quick Chats & Croton-On-Hudson

As I sit here with a nasty code in by doze in NYC… getting ready to travel home tomorrow… I look back and marvel at all I got to experience whilst here in NYC over 2 short weeks! OK, I’m paying the price for it now, but I’m feeling like a very lucky girl right now.

One of the marvelous peeps that I got to spend time with was Rick Sammon. First at his fall workshop in Croton-on-Hudson along with his amazing wife and partner Susan Sammon – she’s the BEST!  Then he agreed to do a Quick Chat with me at Photo Plus Expo:

Presets & Textures… Oh My!

I love new experiences. Roll them in a nice coating of fun, learning curve rich goodness and I’m hooked!
Such was my experience in creating new presets and textures for Macphun. I was delighted and honored when they asked me to do so.

I went to town on them a few months ago. I’ve certainly created and used my own textures… but not strictly for and in black and white – and never presets. What a cool thing to do! (You can create your own too, BTW… it’s yet another way to create your own unique touches.)

Since then, I’ve been using them ALOT to fine tune and get ’em dialed in. I finally like the results! And now… two are being released in their new Marketplace this week… the KHutt Urbex textures and The Dynamic Collection presets, both created for Tonality Pro. Click this link to see what they look like. Or just click on the images below.
(I put them here so you know what they’ll look like on the page.)

There are also presets and such from several other fabulous photographers – so if you like presets and textures, you MUST have a gander.

For any regular Macphun product you do decide to spring for… use the code KHUTT for 10% off your purchase. (Discount = yay!!)

However, please note that the presets and textures are not included in that discount. Sorry! But the good news is that they’re super inexpensive to begin with and you’ll barely miss it. 😀

The Lay of The Land

What’s Been Going On Behind the Curtain?

I’ve been nose to the grindstone. Behind closed doors. Below the radar. “Leave a message at the beep” now for weeks. I might even say for months!
So, I thought perhaps I’d take a moment to have a gander of the lay of the land looking forward… and share it with you. Because fun stuff is coming up!

An ALL NEW Episode of  The Chat This Week!!

FIRST up this week is my first completed episode of “The Chat” in about 2 months!! Yes, on Wednesday it will be released to the world. Woot!
The pace of said past few months has been so intense I haven’t had time to edit a single episode, which has pained me to no end. Well, truthfully I had to finally let GO of the pain, because it wasn’t doing me – or you – any good. But it’s unintended hiatus will be over on Wednesday with a brand new episode. Chris MacAskill, President of SmugMug will be my guest. And LORDY what an amazing life he’s had! In fact, we shot the main episode AND 2 shorter segments as “extras”, which I’ll show as exclusives right here. It’s all fantastic!

But wait, there’s more! Like who my upcoming guests on The Chat are, a new website on the way, TWiP Pro, Photo+ Expo, a big NYC photo walk, new works coming up and more!
First, however… a word from our Mother Nature in New Zealand:

DPE Podcast: Women in Photography

The Awesome Rick Sammon

Rick Sammon is a fabulous landscape and travel photographer, educator and overall fantastic guy whom I’ve admired (and learned from!) for many years. He’s also a bass player – as is my husband – so I have a special place in my heart for the multi-talented Rick.

I was so honored when he asked me to to do an interview for his world-reknowed podcast: Digital Photo Experience (DPE Podcast)! This particular episode was about “Women in Photography”, which of course hit home for me. It includes me and friends Valerie Jardin and Jan Kabili, each talking about our particular areas of expertise. (click on the image below to listen)

Valerie is one of the top street photographers in the world today and teaches workshops all over the world. Jan is a fabulous photographer – and also works for Lynda.com, co-hosts The Photoshop Show on Google+ along with my other great friend Ron Clifford – and teaches Lightroom and Photoshop techniques. She’s a wizard! We are all also Masters in The Arcanum, which is great fun and such an incredible learning experience for one and all. (you can check out my previous post about my experience so far in The Arcanum here).

In our interview, Rick and I talked about composition, processing, use of shadow and highlights, the value of being able to return to a place repeatedly to find new moods and inspiration, along with a bunch of other photography-related stuff. I love talking to Rick… and can’t wait to visit his neck of the woods very soon when I’m in New York! We’re going to shoot an episode of The Chat, go shooting at a couple of his favorite places… maybe I’ll even get to hear some of his music!
